You don't have a valid ticket?

The train staff will report the irregularity…

Their work is to ensure your safety and keep you informed - but also to check that tickets are valid and report any irregularities. This means that it is part of their job to insist on your presenting your identity card or discount card, or even seize the disputed ticket.

If you can't present a valid ticket, there are several possibilities:

You inform the staff before boarding the train:

  • You accept the transaction proposed. You then pay the cost of your journey, with the possible addition of the 3,00 EUR* administrative fee if the station you set out from has no sales staff.
  • If you can't pay on the train, the staff will draw up an irregularity report, which will cost you the price of the journey, plus an administrative fee of 7,70 EUR* on condition that you sort things out at a station within 14 days. After this, the file will be handed over to the Central Customer Service. The administrative fee will be raised to 200,00 EUR*.

If you haven't advised the staff:

  • You accept the transaction proposed, and then pay the cost of your journey plus 12,50 EUR*. If you do this, you avoid an irregularity report being made out.
  • If, for any reason, you don't accept the transaction, the staff will make out an irregularity report stating the cost of the journey and the fixed fee, which will be 60,00 EUR* if you are aged 18 or over and 30,00 EUR* for the under-18s. Payment must be made in a station within 14 days. After this deadline, the fixed amount will automatically be raised to 200,00 EUR*.

When making the payment, present your copy of the irregularity report and don't leave without getting a receipt. Then you will be sure that your case has been closed.

Then again …

If you haven't got a valid ticket, and you can't pay on the train or provide evidence of your identity or address: obviously, the SNCB/NMBS won't be able to allow you to remain on board.
The staff may therefore invite you to leave the train at the next stop, or even call in the police. These are legal requirements which we cannot set aside.

Untruthful declarations and proven cases of fraud (e.g. forged tickets) will not be ignored in any circumstances.
