Travel to work free of charge

traffic jam

Our travel needs have risen extraordinarily steeply in just a few years. The result of this is that our roads are jam-packed morning and evening. To try to solve this mobility problem, the Federal Government has decided to offer free transport to people deciding to take the train to work.

The introduction of free travel to work is going ahead gradually

In fact, civil servants, employees of public bodies and autonomous public undertakings have been benefiting from free travel to work since 1st March 2004.

As part of its endeavour to respect the Kyoto Protocol - standards requiring Belgium to reduce its CO2 emissions - the Government has also introduced free travel to work to the STIB.

Since 1st January 2005, free travel to work has been extended to private sector employees.
