Who is it for ?

You can claim a Free Carer Card if you are unable to travel alone due to one of the following disabilities:

• reduction in autonomy of at least 12 points according to the degree of autonomy evaluation guide
• permanent invalidity or inability to work of at least 80%
• permanent invalidity arising directly from the lower limbs or causing an invalidity rate of at least 50%
• total paralysis or amputation of the upper limbs
• allocation of category III or IV top-up.

Wat are the benefits of this card ?

This card enables you to travel with an additional person on the basis of a single ticket. You yourself must hold a 1st or 2nd class ticket. Your carer travels free of charge in the same class and on the same route. This carer may be a person or a dog on a lead.
Your ticket need not be a standard ticket. Tickets with discounts, railcards, and passes, are also accepted.

The Free Carer Card, valid for 5 years (or less, depending on the duration of the disability mentioned in the certificate) on the SNCB network, is also accepted on the TEC and DE LIJN regional transport company lines. It also allows you to benefit from the STIB's special "Minibus" service (Tel: 02 515 23 65).

A person travelling free of charge may not take a free carer on the train.

• When the card is requested for a child aged under 6 or under 12, who is travelling free of charge in certain conditions, the latter must hold a valid ticket.
• Exception is made for persons holding a National Reduced Fare Card. They may use their reduced fare card in combination with the Free Carer Card.

You hold a 'discount card for patriotic reasons' and the wording "guide authorised" appears on your card. In this case, you are already entitled to a free carer and you do not need to apply for the free carer card. For your carer to travel free of charge, you just have to present your discount card bearing the wording "guide authorised" to the ticket inspector and hold a valid ticket. In this case, you get a discount on presentation of your "discount for patriotic reasons" card.
