Transport of pets

young woman with her dog on the platform

You can take a small pet with you.

It will travel free of charge if it is kept in a cage, box or basket which has been designed for this purpose and which it cannot escape from, as long as this container is not more than 55 cm long, 30 cm wide and 30 cm high.

Dogs may be held on leads. In this case, you must have a 2nd class 50% ticket (1) even if you're travelling 1st class. However, you'll never pay more than 2,00 EUR (2) per single journey.

If you regularly take your dog with you on the train, it can use a 10-journey card. And if you travel with a Key Card yourself, you can fill in an extra line on your card for your dog.

Pets are not allowed to take passenger's seats, even if they are in cages etc. or on leads.

(1) Plus the fixed fee of 0,8058 EUR 2nd class
(2) Price valid from 1st february 2009

Important advice

You must take every possible precaution to ensure that the presence of your animal and its behaviour do not in any way endanger other passengers or SNCB staff. This does not mean that dogs have to be muzzled. However, if the passengers or staff feel that your dog's behaviour is obstructive or dangerous, then the guard may insist on it being muzzled. If you refuse to do this or have no muzzle, the staff may insist on your leaving the train at the next station.

Guide-dogs of blind people and assistance dogs travel free of charge.
