Avignon, the City of the Popes and the capital of theatre
Known for its theatre festival, Avignon is a town which is actively creative all year long, with its permanent theatres, art galleries, cinemas, musical, dance, and literary associations, to name but a few...The Festival of Avignon, one of the oldest, most famous drama festivals in the world presents shows for three weeks in July in around twenty locations, from little chapels to the legendary Court of Honour of the Papal Palace.
The historic heart of the town is a UNESCO world heritage site. The ‘Promenade des Doms’ is a tour of the town's main historic monuments. The famous Pont d'Avignon, or 'Bridge of St. Bénezet', according to the legend of its origins, has itself been destroyed several times by floods and wars, but is still visited today.
Wander through the old streets and you'll find antiquarians and art galleries, enjoy local gastronomy, taste the flavours of Provence and the famous Côtes du Rhône, the famous wines whose capital is Avignon.
It won't take you long to get to the most widely-varying sites: the Pont du Gard, Nîmes, Arles, the Camargue, Lubéron and Mont Ventoux, the Baux de Provence, St Rémy and the Alpilles are virtually at the city gates.
